Onyeka Onwenu passes on at 72

Renowned music star and social activist, Onyeka Onwenu, has passed away at the age of 72.

 

According to a report by TheNiche, an online Nigerian newspaper, Onwenu collapsed on Tuesday at the birthday celebration of Dr. Stella Okoli, Founder of Emzor Pharmaceutical, and was rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she passed away.

 

Onwenu, known for her versatility and magnetic personality, was a multi-talented broadcaster-turned-music star who made a significant impact in the entertainment industry. She was born on January 31, 1952, in Arondizuogu, Imo State, and began her journalism career at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

 

Throughout her career, Onwenu was a strong advocate for social justice and environmental causes, earning her international recognition. Her documentary, “Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches,” which she wrote and presented in 1984, remains a definitive film about corruption in Nigeria.
