CAF Hands Down Harsh Penalty on Libya Football Federation

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has found the Libya Football Federation guilty of breaching Article 31 of the African Cup of Nations Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code. This ruling comes after a contentious match between Libya and Nigeria.

Resolutions:

– _Forfeiture of Match_: The match No. 87 Libya v. Nigeria of the CAF African Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025, scheduled for October 15, 2024, in Benghazi, has been declared lost by forfeit by Libya, with a score of 3-0 .

– _Financial Penalty_: The Libya Football Federation has been ordered to pay a fine of USD 50,000.

– _Payment Deadline_: The fine must be paid within 60 days of notification of the present decision.

This decision significantly impacts the qualifying standings for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria now tops the group with 10 points, followed by Benin Republic with 9 points, while Rwanda has 5 points. Libya, with only 1 point, is effectively out of the running for qualification.

The controversy surrounding the match began when the Nigerian team was stranded at an airport in Libya for over 12 hours without food or water, prompting them to boycott the match.
