NCC Orders Telecom Operators to Reactivate Blocked Lines

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed mobile operators to restore all phone lines disconnected over the weekend due to the inability of subscribers to link their National Identification Numbers (NINs) with their Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs).

In a statement, the NCC explained that the decision was made to prioritize consumer interests, as the blockages had caused inconvenience to many subscribers. The commission emphasized that the reactivation is temporary, allowing subscribers a limited time to complete the NIN-SIM verification process.

The NIN-SIM linkage policy, introduced in December 2020, aims to enhance national security and maintain an accurate national SIM ownership database. The NCC urged subscribers who have not yet verified their SIMs to do so promptly to avoid future disruptions.

This move comes after many telecom subscribers faced difficulties accessing their phone lines due to the inability to verify their NINs with their SIMs, resulting in blocked numbers. The NCC’s directive aims to alleviate these challenges and ensure that consumers can maintain access to their lines.
