Ongoing: University of Ibadan Students Protest Electricity Rationing, Fee Hike

Students of the University of Ibadan have embarked on a peaceful protest, crippling academic activities and halting vehicular movements within the campus.

The protest, led by the Student Union Government (SUG), is against the introduction of a 10-hour daily electricity supply on campus, which took effect on Tuesday.

The SUG President, Comrade Aweda Damilola, stated that the protest aims to achieve three key demands: the withdrawal of the memo on electricity rationing and provision of constant electricity on campus, total reversal of the recent hike in school fees, and an end to the victimization of three students who protested on May 13th, 2024.

The protest began at 07:30 am, with students barricading the school gates and major roads within the campus. Commercial transport stakeholders complied with the SUG directives, halting vehicular activities.

While students were seen trekking to different departments and classes, academic activities were significantly disrupted, with students at various faculties, including Education, Arts, and Social Sciences, being chased out of classrooms.

Despite the disruptions, the protest remains peaceful, with other activities on campus continuing uninterrupted. The students’ demands remain unresolved, and the situation is being closely monitored.
